Composite Magazine was created in 1991 as a Xeroxed fanzine
by me, Scott Ritcher.

The
new magazine was comprised mostly of interviews with my friends
in Louisville.
|
ISSUE #2
1991
|
It
caught on quickly and was honored as Zine of the Month in Sassy.
|
A
new issue came out whenever it was ready, which ended up being about
once a year.

ISSUE #3
1993 |
By
1994, people had heard about K Composite in Rolling Stone,
Harper's, The Courier-Journal, The Chicago Tribune, and on several
radio programs including NPR's Talk of the Nation.

Our
website can be used to make Contact with the staff. And you can
visit the Store area to subscribe or order back issues and other K Composite-related

1997
Orders
for the magazine were coming in from everywhere, and K Composite
began enjoying a national following. |
In
1998, I ran for mayor of Louisville. That took up a lot of time.

In
1999, I got some of my friends involved in helping me expand the
magazine.
|
We
rented a little office in downtown Louisville which became known
as the "clubhouse."
|
Sometimes
we worked until the middle of the night.
|
Other
times we quit at noon
and went to Six Flags. |

1999 Our
first edition from the new office was the first K Composite to be printed in color.
|
The
magazine launched a website which has additional stuff not in
the paper magazine.

Each
issue starts as a list of interviewees. Just like when I started
the magazine, the people who appear in it are friends of the editors.
|
 
After
we have the questions ready, we photograph our subjects and give
them the third degree. |

2000 |
Progress
is charted as the edition begins to take shape.
The
page numbers are continuous from the first issue. |
Proofs
of finished pages are hung on the wall where they are scrutinized
and revised. |
We
invite some advertisers to come along for the ride.
|
The
final version is sent to the printer electronically and comes back
as pallets of wonderful magazines. The whole place smells like ink.
Mmmmmm. |

2000

At
the beginning of 2001, I moved to Providence, Rhode Island, in search
of new adventures.
I
stayed for a year or so and then moved to Hollywood. About a year
after that, I returned to Louisville. |

In 2004, a controversy erupted when K Composite's online store began selling Saint Clinton merchandise.
A book of hilarious and explosive hate mail was published called "Letters to Saint Clinton."

In 2004 and 2006, two books were published which compiled all twelve issues. Both books together contain all 72 interviews from issues 1 through 12.

Despite a lapse between new issues, K Composite's thirteenth edition came out in early 2008.

|
In 2009, I moved again, this time to Stockholm, Sweden.
I began publishing an online magazine about life in Sweden called Snuggling With the Enemy. |
The first K Composite app for iPhone hit the App Store in 2011.
K Mate includes interviews from K Composite and fresh writing from my friends, many of whom have been interviewed in the magazine.

K Composite entered a whole new life as it was launched on the iPad in 2011.
New issues will follow about every two months!
